What a great surprise. I have a decent handful of Sam Rivers recordings in my collection that I have owned for years, a few under his name and several more with Tony Williams, Dave Holland, Larry Young, Miles Davis and I think a few others. I have always really enjoyed his further out playing but I never would have imagined that this set of slightly more reigned in playing would be so rewarding. From what I had read about this album previously I mistakenly assumed that Rivers had not yet fully found his voice on this more straight ahead quartet date. That could not be further from the truth. He is incredibly fluent and well versed in all of his solos and plays with a high level of confidence and command of his horn. He shows here that he has mastered the bop language and this recording is a summing up of all of those previous experiences. From this point forward Rivers would begin speaking new languages and even inventing some of them on his own. I have even more respect for his work after hearing this album. It should have joined my collection a long time ago but i am at least glad that it is here now for it better puts his later works in perspective for me. I needed a good surprise like this in my ears today. If you like to listen to music that means something then Fuchsia Swing Song is worth your money.
